Adoption and outcome review

Original workshop design for pilot use. This format has not been validated for effectiveness.

Summary and decision

Assess whether delivery, practice and outcomes match the agreed logic.

Decision: Decide which practices and interventions to continue, adapt or stop.

Preparation

  • Bring W06 criteria, baseline, delivery records and experience evidence.
  • Check denominators, response coverage and changes in the population.

Audience

6-12 people: sponsor, analyst, employee representatives, HR, FM and operational owners.

Exercises A and B

Exercise A: Evidence review

  1. Review reach, setting adoption, delivery quality, employee practice and outcomes separately.
  2. Compare with baseline and note changes in workload, staffing or business conditions.
  3. Show variation and missing data rather than only averages.

Exercise B: Adaptation decision

  1. Test whether the assumed link between intervention, practice and outcome occurred.
  2. Record benefits, burdens and unintended effects by group.
  3. Choose continue, adapt, investigate or stop and define the next review.

Illustrative example

Illustrative, not a real case

  • Illustrative: training is complete and booking use is high, but work delays remain.
  • The review examines whether rooms and schedules fit actual dependencies.
  • The programme revises the intervention rather than claiming success from attendance.

Completion criteria

  • Delivery, employee use and outcomes remain distinguishable.
  • Every percentage has a denominator and period.
  • Adaptation decisions preserve an audit trail.

Follow-up

  • Update the strategy and assumption register.
  • Feed effective practices and remaining risks into W16.

Points of attention

  • A before-and-after comparison does not isolate the intervention effect.
  • RE-AIM adoption and employee use are different measures here.

Workplace phase and change activities

Workplace: Recalibrate (phase in the Workplace method)

Change Management

  • Learn

Why this workshop helps: Assesses delivery, use and outcomes against the agreed logic, then continue, adapt or stop.

Adapting outside a workplace setting: Replace occupancy measures with measures that fit your change, such as lead time or rework.

RE-AIM. What is RE-AIM?

Why here: Informs reviewing reach, adoption, implementation and outcomes as separate dimensions. In RE-AIM, adoption concerns settings and delivery staff; employee use is reported here as a separate indicator. It does not validate this workshop.

Finding:
Evaluate reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation and maintenance separately.
Limitation for workplace:
In RE-AIM adoption refers to participating settings and delivery agents. We separately track employee use as a local practice indicator.

Skivington et al. (2021). A new framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions

Why here: Informs the choice to keep an audit trail of adaptation decisions so results stay interpretable. A before-and-after comparison does not isolate the intervention effect. It does not validate this workshop.

Finding:
Context, programme theory, stakeholder involvement, uncertainty and iterative refinement belong throughout intervention development.
Limitation for workplace:
Guidance from health research informs our design. It does not validate this workplace workshop sequence.
